Sclerotherapy of veins and capillaries

A procedure introduced into practice in 1920 for the treatment of spider nevi (telangiectasiae), small red or purple vein enlargements in the skin. Spider nevi are hereditary changes and are most often found on the legs, especially the lower legs.

Sclerotherapy has proven to be a very popular non-surgical cosmetic procedure.

Technique:Venous dilatations are marked in a standing position. Larger extensions are treated first. A sclerosing agent is injected into the spider nevi with a micro-needle. The injected solution first causes the vein to turn pale and then gradually disappear. A typical treatment lasts 30 minutes to an hour.

Sclerotherapy is an excellent alternative to surgery, allowing the venous system of the leg to remain intact.

Advantages:Working activity is possible immediately after sclerosing or usually in 24 hours.

Complete correction should not be expected with one treatment. 50-70% of treated veins disappear permanently during the first treatment. Three to four treatments are usually required for optimal results.
